WA Year 8 Mathematics

WA Year 8 Mathematics

  • Curriculum :  WA
  • Grade :  Year 8
  • Subject :  Mathematics
  • Type :  Both
  • Summary :  The syllabus for Year 8 Mathematics has 3 content strands: Number and Algebra, Measurement and Geometry, and Statistics and Probability.

Short Description :

Small Group sessions:

Group size : Upto 4 students

From AUD 32 per hour

Limited seats

One to one sessions:

From AUD 40 per hour

Course Description :

As students move from Year 8 to Year 9, they learn further about rates, ratios, and percentages, the use of index laws for whole numbers, profit and loss calculations; and rational and irrational numbers. They understand the difference between factorisation and expansion of algebraic expressions; they simplify algebraic expressions and solve linear equations.

They solve problems involving the volume of solids, calculate the area and perimeters of quadrilaterals like parallelograms, rhombuses, and kites, and measure the area and circumference of circles. They also learn about the criteria for the congruence of triangles.

Two-way triangles and Venn diagrams, probabilities of complementary events, mean, median, mode, and outliers.

Syllabus:

The 3 general WA Year 8 mathematics content strands: number and algebra, measurement and geometry, and statistics and probability, are presented to students according to 4 proficiency strands of understanding, fluency, problem-solving, and reasoning.

Number and Algebra:

·     Terminating and recurring decimals
·     Index laws and zero index
·     Four operations with rational numbers
·     Irrational numbers
·     Percentage increase and decrease
·     Rate and ratios
·     Profit and Loss
·     Distributive law for expansion of algebraic expressions
·     Factorise algebraic expressions
·     Solve linear equations

Measurement and Geometry:

·     Conversion of units of Area and Volume
·     The Area of Parallelograms, Rhombuses, and Kites
·     Area and circumference of the circle
·     12 hour time and 24 hour time
·     Properties of quadrilateral using Congruence of triangles

Statistics and Probability:

·     2-way tables, Venn diagrams
·     Complementary events
·     Events expressed using ‘and’ , ‘or’ , ‘ at least', ‘at most’
·     Outliers, Mean, Median, Mode

Key features of the syllabus:

The students identify the connections between related mathematical representations of the following:

·     Recurring decimals and indices
·     Algebraic and Arithmetic expressions
·     Equations and their graphs.
·     Statistical measures
·     Profit and loss
·     Perimeter and Area
·     Estimation

Students learn to describe patterns in recurring decimals and indices, find the commonality between operations of expressions with numbers and algebra. Find connections between equations and their graphs, and understand the purpose of statistical measures

Calculates using decimals, integers, indices, converting between recurring decimals and fractions

Solve problems with ratios, profit and loss, area and perimeter They learn about the method and purpose of estimation.

Why Edugraff:

Edugraff, online maths tutors,  understand the needs and learning stage of Year 8 Maths students and that is different for each student. Since this is the second year of transition from primary to secondary school, we identify the students' whether they have adapted to the high school norms of learning Maths. Some students need extra help to adapt, while others who aspire to improve further are given guidance at that level.

FAQ :

1. How can my child excel in Maths?

Edugraff tutors identify the talent in children in the first few sessions and guide them as per their learning strengths. While many students start getting  immediate benefits in the first 4 to 50 sessions, some may need a few more sessions to get into the growth track.

2. My child was doing well in primary school maths but is now falling behind in maths in Year 8

At Edugraff, the tutors understand the student and provide the help that best suits their situation. We also match the best-matched tutor to a student based on the discussion with the parent.
