Year 9 mathematics students in Western Australia are expected to understand the use of index laws, represent numbers in scientific notation, and solve problems using simple interest calculations. They learn to sketch linear and nonlinear patterns, find the gradient of a straight line, and calculate the distance between two points. Students understand the relationship between similar triangles and trigonometric ratios and learn to find the surface area and volume of cylinders and right-angled prisms.
Students also learn to create frequency tables, find relative frequencies, and find the probabilities of 2 step experiments. They explore methods to collect primary and secondary data, draw histograms, and analyse stem and leaf plots. They learn to interpret data, compare symmetric and skewed data distributions and the relative changes in mean, median, and mode.
The 3 general mathematics content strands: number and algebra, measurement and geometry, and statistics and probability, are taught based on the 4 proficiency strands of understanding, fluency, problem-solving, and reasoning.
Number and Algebra:
· Direct proportions in graphs and equations.
· Index laws and zero index
· Graph Linear and Non- linear relationships
Measurement and Geometry:
· The area of composite shapes
· Surface area of cylinders and right-angled prisms
· Solve right-angle triangles using similarity and trigonometric ratios.
Statistics and Probability:
· Two-step Chance experiments using tree diagrams and 2-way tables
· Data representation and interpretation
· Skewed and symmetric data in relation to Mean, Median, and Mode
· Relative frequencies
· Real-life examples of categorical and numeric data
The students identify the connections between related mathematical representations of the following:
· Simple and compound interest.
· Equations and Inequalities
· Algebraic relations and their graphs.
· Parallel and perpendicular lines.
· Congruence and similarity
Students learn to expand binomials, draw graphs of simple non-linear equations, and progress to a better understanding of right-angled triangles using trigonometry, similarity, and the Pythagorean theorem. They gain an understanding of 3-dimensional geometry by learning the surface area of composite solids. Furthermore, they learn about 2-step experiments, back-to-back stem and leaf plots, histograms, and gain insights into the complexity involved in random experiments with and without replacements. They compare skewed and symmetric data and understand how they are related to the values of mean, median, and mode.

1. Is it required for the students in Year 9 Maths to learn ahead of the class?
Learning ahead of the lesson is not necessary. However, for students who are on extension programs, Edugraff tutors recommend getting introduced to the topic just ahead of the lesson and doing extra practice.
