I have studied literature since school and currently have students up to a Masters level. I specialise in Australian, British, American and Spanish literature in particular. I usually work with the student to help them build a strong understanding of the text, and its wider historical and social content, before helping them to understand its themes and key ideas. From there I work with my students to strengthen their writing (factual or creative) and building of their own ideas on paper. I use a variety of exercises and mediums (film, poetry, novels, rap etc) to achieve this.

My basic premise is that anything you can say, you should be able to write. My strengths are in thematic reading of the text, literary techniques and essay writing. I usually work with the student to help them build a strong understanding of the text, and its wider historical and social content, before helping them to understand its themes and key ideas. As writing is an ever-evolving field, I feel learning is very much a two-way process, and try to use dialogue, discussion and contextual materials and examples to build the student's understanding. I really enjoy this field and try to bring my enthusiasm, knowledge and experience to every class I teach.

My name is Jaye Sergeant and I have been a private tutor for ten years, teaching over 100 students in Australia, the UK, India, Spain, Thailand, China and Turkey. I have a Bachelors Degreee in International Relations from the University of Sydney and a Masters in NGO Management from UTS. I have also worked and volunteered in the humanitarian sector for 10 years, focusing primarily on refugee and asylum seeker issues and education. I speak Spanish, advanced French, Portuguese and Turkish, and basic Italian. In my spare time I love reading and salsa dancing.
