Course Description :

 

In the Western Australian curriculum for Year 10 Mathematics, students are expected to achieve proficiency in applying the four mathematical operations to algebraic fractions, solving for unknowns by substitution, and factorising and expanding the algebraic expression. They understand graphs based on mathematical relations, simple and compound interest formulas and their applications; and the probabilities of 2 and 3-step experiments. They gain fluency in investigating data sets and analyses by comparing different data sets. They understand the independence of events using Venn diagrams.

They learn to calculate the surface area of prisms, solve unknowns in practical problems using trigonometry, and solve simultaneous equations. They develop reasoning skills by formulating geometric proofs using the rules for congruence and similarity of triangles.

 

Syllabus

The 3 general mathematics content strands: number and algebra, measurement and geometry, and statistics and probability, are treated according to the 4 proficiency strands of understanding, fluency, problem-solving, and reasoning.

Key features of the syllabus:

The students identify the connections between related mathematical representations of the following:

·     Simple and compound interest
·     Equations and Inequalities
·     Algebraic relations and their graphs
·     Parallel and perpendicular lines
·     Congruence and similarity

They will expand binomial expressions, factorise monic quadratic equations, solve simple quadratic equations and pairs of simultaneous linear equations, and calculate unknown angles in right-angled triangles. Identify the different data sets based on their shapes when plotted. They can analyse bivariate data with time as the independent variable. They find the probabilities of 2 and 3-step experiments and can find quartile and interquartile ranges.
